Christmas in Prague, Veselé Vánoce v Praze...
It was a very unexpected and interesting experience being in Prague for Christmas.
Temperature remains close to freezing during December, don´t forget your gloves, you will be happy to put them on.
Prague is a charming place during Christmas, the old town dark and gloomy streets are illuminated by decorations and show windows. If you feel cold, you may stop for a hot wine in one of the Christmas markets. The biggest one is in staroměstské náměstí. The atmosphere is very similar to Dresden or Vienna markets, there are typical handmade products, food specialities and Christmas music concerts. There are a lot of ice skating rink in the center.
Czech like to spend Christmas with families, chating and playing before Jezusek will bring presents under tree.
What do Czech eat for Christmas ?
Carp is the central ingredient for the traditional Christmas dinner, they do serve vegetable salad with the fish. No foie gras, no oyster unfortunately, anyway it was very good even for a French gourmet. What to drink with dishes ? You ll maybe appreciate moravian wines, czech beers and spirits like Bohemia sekt.
Czech traditionally buy carp in small temporary shops in the street and keep the fish in the bathroom before cooking it. Carp is the national fish that you can find in bohemian lakes. Třebon in south bohemia is famous for its carps.(the one on the picture is from Třebon lake)
The snow is very abondant during this winter, especially since the beginning of January...Prague sleeps under snow.
