Once upon the time, I have been living in České Budějovice and working for its University…A great memory I would like to share with you. No
comparisons with the brilliant Prague, nevertheless a mysterious and interesting place to discover.
České Budějovice is the largest city in South Bohemia, not very far from Austrian and German borders, just before the area we used to call Sudètes area or Sudety. The city was officially created in 1265, and has a long
history influenced by the Rosenberg family till 1611.
It is possible to visit a middle age castle near by the city;
it is few minutes driving from the centre. The place is lovely; you follow a quiet path in between the forest which slowly goes down to the ruin of the castle. A refreshing walk close to the
river.
The city is famous for its beautiful and stylish town
square, Naměstí Přemysla Otakara II. It is a large square, especially
regarding to the size of the City (population: 96000). On the opposite corner of the square you won’t miss the Black Tower; you can also go up and
appreciate the view on the city. The square is surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants.
The city is famous for its local beer, Budweiser which doesn’t have anything to do with the American lager. You can do the visit of the factory, very interesting for those who are curious and like beer;
the production process is the result of a 8 centuries heritage.
Czech people love in line roller skating, pleasure you would
appreciate along Vltava River on the way to Hluboká nad Vltavou castle. The Townshend International School of Hluboká brings students from
the all world.
The Ice Hockey team plays in first league, in the modern
Budwar Arena.
A good place to meet french people is Chat Noir coffee located
just under Alliance francaise office, on the main square. The Chat Noir owner is czech and speaks fluently french.
Český Krumlov
Castle is a UNESCO world heritage site, located 30 km from the town. I invite you to have a look on wikipedia
link to get more insights about this beautiful place.
Ceská ulice is my favourite street in
České Budějovice, maybe cause I have been living there, it is just behind the main square, there are nice hospoda and restaurants, and I would advise you more particularly the
Singer bar for its special atmosphere, Vokno to have good sandwiches at any time and Solnice to enjoy concerts; galeries and
shows.
